I'd be scared shitless... but it's being run by Spielberg. There has to be some comfort that he - of ALL the directors in Hollywood - has taken interest in it.
Best to just wait and see.

Hollywood needs to stay away from anime. Seriously >_> I thought they had learned their lesson with DBZ.

DBZ was fun, and there will be sequels. But they're gonna actually go into DBZ territory, instead of the amalgamated Dragonball and Dragonball Z route that the first movie had.

Hollywood needs to stay away from anime. Seriously >_> I thought they had learned their lesson with DBZ. You're underestimating the collective greed and stupidity of Hollywood then. To them, the Dragonball: Evolution film wasn't a failure... it was just another way to make a quick buck. Any other form of art with an immediate response from fans is the same sure-fire way. That's why Hollywood has been so adamant about making films adapted from novels, comics and video games lately. They're money makers through and through. Few of them are actual artists these days.

Ever heard of rumours about making of a Hollywood version of Death Note starring Zac Efron as Kira/Light?
Yeah, now that would be the end of it all...

Can't they just Bowdlerize the Japanese/Chinese Death Note movies instead? It'd be much less painful ... though still painful...

.... you TOTALLY just used the term Bowdlerize and made my night. Thanks Albert.
I second John's note of Stephen Spielberg being attached to this. That's a good sign. A VERY good sign. He's the kind of guy that'll look at something and want to do it right.
Also, it's really lame to typecast Zac Efron just because he was in High School Musical. I can't attest to this personally, but I was reading somewhere that he was also in some indie dramatic film playing a serious role, and got a lot of actual critical acclaim. And plus if there's anyone in hollywood right now that could be that little fucker Light, it's probably Zac, he fits the bill physically and there aren't any really good teen-ish actors anyway.
Of course, Death Note's dumb, so it doesn't matter.

Good point. Stephen Spielberg's one of the best directors in this generation.
At least there's a reason to look forward to it.

What? Asians for Japanese roles? PREPOSTEROUS!
Yeah I learned Bowdlerize from looking up Robotech. It was an attempt of bringing Japanese Anime to an American audience WITHOUT Bowdlerizing it... and though I haven't witnessed it myself... I've heard it achieved its vision.
I'm counting on Steven Spielberg to save the world of porting video games, novels, and anime into the world of Hollywood. I wish him luck... it's not easy, and many have failed before him. May he heed the warnings of the lost souls, grip tightly the arm rests of his director's chair... and make... a FUCKING EPIC MOVIE!
