He could see the aura get brighter. He knew what was coming, but again had no time to react to it. Connor had not expected Gabriel to grab the blade. Nor for the shock effect that came afterward. It was the equivalent of holding a lightning rod.
The blade shattered alright, and Connor was floored by the blast which was a bit more amplified due to the sword and the fact that he was already hypersensitive. Connor fought with instinct, but always thought ahead. He was not used to fighting against those with 'abilities.' He was new to that. He didn't even know it was possible until he discovered his own. he had heard legends, stories from Suichi about such things. But, it was his fight with Sara that confirmed it.
Connor lay on the floor, and grinned. Gabriel seemed pleased. "You know... I would love to find a way to counter that." Even in pain, his lightheartedness wasn't squelched. He was still Connor, even during a fight. He managed to sit up, and listened to Gabriel's approval. He stood, walked a bit toward him, and bowed, like a student to his master.
"Thank you. Your words are not lost on me." He stood. "I was... my goal was to prove I was worth all this trouble." It was obvious he didn't like showing he was weak. He didn't want others to think he needed special treatment. "I wanted... your approval. Though, and I am hoping I am not overstepping my boundaries but, may I ask something?"
He paused a moment. He was very respectful, and he knew his place. Right now, he had agreed to serve under Gabriel for the common goal. As of right now, he was probably the mos obedient one Gabriel had. But, he doubted that was the reason behind this. "I would like to know more about this upcoming match you mentioned, but first, something else has been bothering me." There were multiple things bothering him, but Gabriel probably didn't care about most of them.
"Why did you pick me? Everyone else at the meeting was stronger, in one way or another. Bix's lack of emotions, Sara's speed, skill and strength. The others I didn't know by name, but I felt their aura. One thing my abilities can do is give me that much. Even during a fight, I can tell if someone is holding back. Our first little match, when you struck me. It was about thirty five percent of what you were capable of. You controlled your strength, but I could still feel it."
He wasn't pleading, nor bragging. He was calm, but showed he was confused. "You had your pick. You could have picked someone with more experience, more skill. I guess I just wanted to know why." He bowed his head. "Please don't think I am questioning your judgment. I just wish to understand it with this choice. Again, if I was too bold, I apologize."
He was bold, and held an inner strength. But, he didn't wish to seem like he was challenging Gabriel. Such was not the case. Connor, though he knew who he was right now, held little value in himself. As confident as he was in his abilities, he held little in the way of self confidence in general.
